The maintainers of Hyperledger Fabric, a platform for distributed ledgers supported by a modular architecture that delivers high degrees of flexibility, confidentiality, resiliency and scalability, have published their first release candidate for testing, according to the project’s blog .

The first release candidate is v1.0.0-rc1, according to Christopher Ferris of IBM and Jonathan Levi of Hacera, release managers for Hyperledger Fabric 1.0.

Hyperledger Fabric is the first of five incubator projects to graduate from Hyperledger, an umbrella for software developer communities creating open source blockchain and related technologies supported by the Linux Foundation.

Hyperledger Fabric is designed to support pluggable deployments of different components, and to accommodate the intricacies existing across the economic ecosystem. Capabilities include identity management, privacy and confidentiality, efficient processing, chain code functionality and modular design. IBM provided the codebase for the project.

Team Conducts Fixes, Tests Coverage

The Hyprledger Fabric1.0 team has conducted bug fixes, test coverage improvements based on user feedback, bug fixes and changes to address static scan findings such as static security scanning, unused code, linting, spelling and more.

There are now no known vulnerabilities and no known issues and workarounds.

The code has been frozen since the team released the v1.0.0-beta release, excepting any defect fixes, new and enhanced tests and documentation enhancements.

The team encourages everyone to test and provide feedback so that it can deliver a robust and secure 1.0.0. They will run security scans and audits on the latest release, and address any issues that need remediation. The 1.0.0-rc1 release was tagged on June 23.

At the time of the release, there were no high or highest severity defects reported in JIRA, and the defect count is in the mid teens and dropping. The managers noted it was a huge effort to reduce the open defects over 1.0.0-beta and undergo manual and automated testing.

There were 150 engineers from 27 organizations that contributed to the Hyperledger Fabric projects. Fifty-seven engineers, writers and testers contributed to the post-beta cleanup effort.

As with the beta release, the Hyperledger Fabric Node and Java SDKs are also available for developing applications.

Project Expands

Since the Hyperledger Fabric project entered incubation a year ago, its diversity of contributors increased from nearly no diversity to 45%, representing contributors or developers working for one of 19 other companies, including banks, exchanges, large ISVs or startups.

Hyperledger Fabric has also grown in terms of sub-projects from other community members, including Fujitsu, DTCC, London Stock Exchange and others.

SWIFT, the operator of the platform used by the global interbanking system, chose the Hyperledger Fabric, as the core technology for its proof-of-concept trial that sees participation from a number of global banks for real-time cross-border payments.

Japanese retail giant AEON and IBM Japan are using Hyperledger Fabric for a trial of a blockchain financial services and payments platform for consumers and enterprises in Asia. The blockchain platform will notably facilitate virtual currency payments between individuals and businesses.
